Journalists Urged to Champion Unity, Excellence in Education Reporting

From L-R: Chairman, Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN), Mr. Mojeed Alabi, receiving an award on behalf of the association from the vice chancellor of Babcock University, Ilisan, Ogun State, Professor Ademola S. Tayo.

The Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Professor Ademola S. Tayo, has called on education writers to prioritise narratives that foster unity, compassion and excellence in their reporting.

Addressing members of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) during a dinner held in their honour, he emphasised the critical role of journalists in shaping public discourse and promoting societal progress.

He urged writers to leverage their influence to promote peace, compassion, and understanding, particularly in a society where discord and strife often dominate the headlines. “Let us utilise our professional platform to advocate for unity rather than perpetuate division through disparaging or destructive narratives,” Prof. Tayo said.

Acknowledging EWAN’s unwavering commitment to educational journalism, the vice-chancellor praised their steadfast dedication to factual, fair, and transformative reporting. He credited their work with fostering transparency, accountability, and positive transformations within Nigeria’s educational framework. “Your endeavours have fundamentally transformed governmental perspectives and institutional approaches to academic affairs,” he remarked.

Reflecting on his tenure, which concludes next year, Professor Tayo expressed gratitude for EWAN’s role in fostering an environment of tranquillity that has enabled Babcock University to excel. He highlighted the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation, achievements he attributed partly to the calibre of journalism that the association represents.

He also emphasised the ethical responsibilities of journalists in an era of rampant misinformation, urging education writers to adhere to the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and accountability. “As educational writers, you carry a distinct responsibility to cover the issues that influence the intellects and destinies of our youth,” he noted.

Professor Tayo reiterated the importance of education in fostering harmony and prosperity, calling on EWAN members to persist in their mission to inspire, enlighten, and elevate public understanding. “Let us build our nation together,” he urged, expressing optimism for a sustained partnership between the association and Babcock University in advancing excellence in educational journalism.
