Babcock University, Ilishan in Ogun state has matriculated 3,258 new students, charging them to discover the purpose and significance of life through a deeper understanding of humanity and society.
The President/Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ademola Tayo, delivered this message on Tuesday during the matriculation ceremony for the new students, comprising nationals from Chad, Benin, Togo, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Gabon, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria.
Professor Tayo emphasised that the ultimate goal of university education is to develop intellectuals with the capacity to perceive phenomena holistically and critically. He assured the students of the university’s dedication to their growth, describing Babcock as a nurturing environment with a mission to guide them towards meaningful and impactful lives.
“You are the catalyst for our presence here and the reason for the establishment of Babcock University,” he said.
Highlighting the university’s commitment to mental, physical, and spiritual development, Professor Tayo urged the fresh students to take advantage of Babcock’s interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial training programmes, as well as its inclusive and diverse community, to define their goals and build the skills required to achieve them.
“You are the architect of your life, and your objectives must stem from your own aspirations,” he charged, encouraging the students to reject all forms of societal biases, preconceptions, and the pressure to conform to norms.
While advising the students to embrace the independence and freedom that university life offers, the professor warned against misconduct, stating that anyone found guilty of hooliganism, bullying, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, or drug-related offences would be expelled immediately.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Ogun State Coordinator of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Mr. Hakeem Abdulhammed, representing the JAMB Registrar, stressed the importance of discipline and focus in achieving academic success. He urged the students to make their families proud by justifying the investment in their education.
