WASSCE: WAEC set to introduce Computer-Based Exams for private candidates in 2024

The Nigeria National Office of West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has announced a shift in its examination format, disclosing plans to transition the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates from Paper and Pencil Test to a Computer-Based Examination (CBE).

This innovative move according to the Council is set to kick off with the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 - First Series, scheduled for February 2024 in urban centers and cities.

According to the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, the objective tests will be exclusively Computer Based, while the Essay and Test of Practical papers will adopt a hybrid approach. In this hybrid format, examination questions will be presented on screens, and candidates will be required to provide answers on the answer booklets provided.

To ease the transition for candidates, WAEC said it has finalized arrangements for a Mock Examination scheduled for February 2024, preceding the official examination.

The Council emphasized its commitment to inclusivity, stating that candidates with special needs have been accommodated in the plan as registration for the exam commences on December 18.

WAEC therefore encouraged all prospective candidates to enhance their computer skills and be well-prepared to embrace the innovative examination format; as the Council envisions a future where all its examinations will be delivered through computer-based platforms.
