Secondary School Girls build AI robot ‘Kiki-Saggy’
Secondary school girls from Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Sagamu, Ogun State, have successfully developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) robot named Okikiola-Sagamu, also known as Kiki-Saggy.
The project, led by 10 students and supported by staff members, was introduced to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, in Abuja.
The student robotics team, composed of both senior and junior class members, explained that Kiki-Saggy stands six feet tall, weighs 60kg, and can achieve a top speed of 10km/h.During the construction phase, the team utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning to bring Okiki-Saggy to life. They credited their achievement to the assistance provided by Coderina.org, an organization fostering technology education, as well as their teachers, particularly the school principal Dr. Muyibat Adenike Olodo, who leads the robotics team.
Dr. Olodo emphasized the importance of technology in driving innovation and creating a brighter future. She highlighted how technology empowers students to explore their creativity, develop problem-solving skills, and engage with cutting-edge technology.
The team envisions continuous improvement for Kiki-Saggy, acknowledging that innovation is an ongoing process. Dr. Olodo emphasized that the education provided in schools equips students to excel in a tech-driven world.
According to the robotics team, the construction of Kiki-Saggy presented challenges in striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality as they encountered technical complexities, intricate coding, financial constraints, hardware issues, and component integration.Overcoming these challenges, they said, led to valuable learning experiences and successful outcomes. They however got some help to get them through the completion of the project from one Madam Lisa from the United States.
The FGGC Sagamu robotics team hopes for support and encouragement from the Ministry of Education to further enhance Kiki-Saggy.
Their story highlights the advancement of robotics technology. Robots have evolved with advanced sensors, actuators, and AI algorithms, enabling them to navigate complex environments, perform precise tasks, and learn from experience.
Robots are making significant contributions to healthcare, assisting in surgeries, patient care, and rehabilitation. In space exploration, robots handle missions in challenging environments, collecting data and performing tasks too hazardous for humans.
The future entails improved human-robot interaction, with robots designed to understand and respond to human emotions, potentially leading to companionship and improved well-being.
As robotics technology continues to advance, its impact on healthcare, space exploration, and daily life remains substantial.
